Anthony’s Avenue

Contemporary Harbour Homes

Positioned in Branksome Park, Poole, this coastal project saw the creation of two distinct homes of 3,000 sq ft each. Completed in 2024, the development bridges traditional design cues with a contemporary ethos. Commissioned by Dean Swift Developments, the brief called for replacing a single-story bungalow with two high-performance family homes. The design focus was on achieving spacious living, modern amenities, and panoramic views within a sustainable and cost-efficient framework.

The design revolves around the concept of duality—two homes that are distinct yet harmonious, blending natural materials with sleek forms to reflect the surrounding landscape and contemporary living aspirations. The penthouse-level living spaces create an “inverted living” experience, positioning daily activities to take full advantage of harbour views.

The design fuses modernist principles with a considered palette of materials, employing zinc cladding for a crisp, contemporary aesthetic juxtaposed with buff brick and render for warmth and texture. The homes’ proportions are carefully calibrated to human scale, with a balance of open and intimate spaces. The penthouse living areas create striking silhouettes against the skyline while maintaining cohesion with the streetscape.

Air source heat pumps provide renewable energy, complemented by high-performance insulation and airtight construction. Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) formed the backbone of the construction, ensuring precision and energy efficiency, aligning with sustainability goals. Navigating local planning constraints in Branksome Park’s conservation-conscious context posed a significant challenge, the team adopted a modular approach to streamline construction while securing planning approval by integrating traditional materials and proportions within a modern framework.
