Bournemouth Pier

Beachfront Zip wire and Climbing Centre

Coined 'PierZip', this innovative recreational project, located at a beloved regional landmark Bournemouth Pier, was completed following planning approval in November 2013. Showcasing the world's first pier-to-shore zip wire, the 25m above sea-level launch tower stands as a symbol of adventure on the Bournemouth coastline. Commissioned by the local authority, this ambitious project sought to transform an underutilised landmark into a vibrant hub of activity.

With a backdrop of bustling promenade life, the 250m dual zip wire enables pairs of thrill-seekers to race to the shore. The project reinterpreted the site's existing narrative, introducing modern, attractions whilst retaining the existing structure which once housed a theatre, breathing new life into a cherished leisure destination. The design choices embrace fluidity and openness which are inspired by the movement of the sea.

The architectural language balances bold modernity with contextual sensitivity. The climbing centre integrates seamlessly into the listed theatre space, while the zipline tower’s profile becomes a recognisable visual landmark. The scale of the attractions is proportioned to maintain harmony with the surrounding built environment and the expansive seascape. The vertical elements of the zipline tower and climbing centre are designed to draw the eye upward without overwhelming the pier’s traditional character.

Prefabrication played a significant role, particularly for the zipline tower, reducing on-site disruption. Restoration work on the former theatre space adhered to conservation principles, preserving its architectural integrity. The layout strategically zones attractions to create a flow between active and passive areas: the climbing centre as an indoor activity zone, while the zipline tower and beach kiosk activate the outdoor spaces. Thoughtfully designed circulation patterns ensure ease of movement. Visitors transition seamlessly from shore to pier to zipline, with clear wayfinding and accessibility features, enhancing inclusivity. The project has revitalised the landmark, fostering a renewed engagement among locals and supporting beachside businesses and tourism.

Close collaboration with heritage consultants ensured compatibility with the listed theatre space. Engineers developed a pioneering structural system for the zipline tower to withstand high winds.
