Farquharson Arms

A Sensitive Transformation of a Historic Pub into a Multi-residential Development.

Situated in Pimperne, Dorset, the Farquharson Arms conversion transforms a historic pub and its outbuildings into a cohesive multi-residential development. The client sought to redevelop the site to create high-quality residential spaces while preserving the character of the landmark pub, a keystone of the existing street scene.

Project Director: Derek Williams

Planning Consultant: Ken Parke Planning

Client: Bayview Developments

Status: Complete

The site lies in the Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), defined by its rural charm, mature landscaping, and captivating views. Significant level changes across the site added complexity, presenting opportunities for creative design solutions. The Farquharson Arms holds a storied presence in Pimperne, once serving as a social and cultural hub. The project required a respectful approach to maintain its iconic status while ensuring its viability as a residential space.

The design balances the scale of existing and new structures, maintaining the visual hierarchy of the former pub as the focal point. A thoughtful approach to site levels allowed for dynamic spatial relationships including enclosed courtyards and a first-floor link to a raised rear amenity, enhancing privacy and outdoor connectivity.

The former hard-standing car park was transformed into a green amenity space, delivering ecological benefits and enhancing biodiversity. The green backdrop of the Cranborne Chase AONB was preserved, ensuring views through the site remain a key feature. The project demanded careful communication with the conservation officer to meet the heritage restoration requirements for the pub and stable.
