The project delivers a low-energy, low-budget home offering sweeping views of protected heathlands, Poole Harbour, and the Isle of Purbeck. The private client sought a modest yet impactful design that emphases sustainability, simplicity without compromising the connection to its extraordinary wider context. As part of a protected natural environment, the project respects its sensitive context by employing minimal visual intrusion to align with local conservation values establishing a harmonious balance between contemporary design and environmental stewardship.
The home’s concept is built around a series of perpendicular masonry walls that anchor the building to the landscape, inform spatial organisation, and frame the site’s vantage point. These grounded elements are juxtaposed with a lightweight timber box that floats above. The home’s simple plan and recurring structural elements reduced reliance on expensive, large-span components, ensuring budget efficiency. Passive solar principles informed the orientation and massing, enhancing energy performance without additional complexity.
