Grand Edwardian Villa
Located in the semi-rural village of Colehill, this grand villa is a stunning example of Edwardian architecture. The clients purchased the property, which hadn’t been modified since it was built in the early 1900s, with the aim of expanding and modernising whilst preserving its rich history.

A unique feature was the original baize door separating the main living space from the servants’ quarters. There was therefore a need to bring the kitchen and other previously ancillary spaces to enjoy the southern aspect of the site which includes long-reaching elevated views.
The extension was designed to contrast with the original villa, showcasing a modern approach through materials and layout, yet harmonising with the existing structure. The oak frame of the new wing complements the traditional aesthetic while providing warmth and texture. The sliding glazed doors allow for seamless integration from inside to outside, enhancing the views of the surrounding garden and landscape.
The raised terrace introduces an outdoor living space, creating a transition between the house and the garden. The design process involved 3D walk-throughs, helping the client visualise each stage of the project, ensuring a smooth process from design to delivery.
The new extension provides an open-plan kitchen and living area, while the updated primary building now includes en-suites for every room, adding both comfort and functionality. The thoughtful redesign of the garden involved the use of retaining walls to manage site levels, making the most of the property’s outdoor space and improving biodiversity through an indigenous planting scheme.
The renovation included design elements such as energy-efficient glazing, which maximised natural light in the new extension and provided better thermal insulation. The oak frame also contributed to the use of renewable materials, reducing the carbon footprint of the construction.
The project was completed in 2017, providing the clients with a home that meets both their contemporary needs and their desire to preserve the character of the original building. The modern wing blends perfectly with the historic villa, creating a cohesive and timeless family home.
