Pamphill School
A Community-Driven Transformation
Pamphill First School, is cherished educational institution in Wimborne, which has been a cornerstone of the local community since 1698. Despite its historical significance, the school faced the threat of closure in 2019 after falling into special measures. DMW Director Sean Daly has a personal connection to the school, with his three children being educated there. As a result DMW embarked on a pro bono initiative to enhance the school’s facilities. Working closely with Dorset Council, The National Trust, and the Initio Learning Trust, the studio delivered a series of strategic interventions to improve functionality, security, and accessibility.

Located in the rural outskirts of Wimborne, Pamphill First School is set within a historically rich landscape that demanded a sensitive yet forward-thinking approach. The redesign aimed to respect the school’s longstanding heritage while adapting its spaces to meet contemporary educational needs. A key challenge when working with the existing historic building was improving circulation and spatial efficiency while preserving the school’s character. The intervention included:
- A Secure Playground and Entryway: A new, clearly defined western entrance enhances safety and accessibility.
- Upgraded Reception and Finishes: Internal and external renovations modernised key areas, enhancing wayfinding and identity.
- Reconfigured Circulation and Toilet Block: The restructuring allowed for the creation of a dedicated pre-school classroom and support spaces.
- Hall Repurposing: The relocation of the pre-school enabled the full-time use of the hall for the first time in the school’s history.
- MUGA (Multi-Use Games Area): A new sports facility, inaugurated by former professional footballer Sylvain Distin, has provided students with an expanded recreational space and opportunities.
The reconfiguration of spaces has significantly improved the school’s operational efficiency. The new circulation layout allows for movement between classrooms, enhancing student engagement and teacher interaction. The upgraded reception and playground ensure a more welcoming and secure environment for pupils and parents.
DMW’s intervention has not only safeguarded the school’s future but also strengthened its role within the community. Our commitment to charitable contributions and pro bono projects has enabled Pamphill First School to remain a vital educational institution. The improvements have led to a surge in enrolment, with the school now oversubscribed, a testament to the project’s success.
