Extension Remodelling of Funeral Complex

Our clients, Tapper Funeral Services, who own and run the Harbour View Crematorium, have been based in Poole since 1904 with their headquarters in the town to this day. Unlike the projects at Harbour View, the brief in this instance, called for a sensitive remodelling of existing 1960s buildings and external spaces into a contemporary funeral complex.

The central location and the sensitive nature of the works required coordination between all parties, ensuring that families could be served for the duration of the build.

A lightweight, highly insulated timber structure was formed to the north of two existing chapels and was conceived to provide a sheltered external amenity space, which connects directly to seven private chapels. An automated entry system allows family members to visit loved ones, 24-7.

An important aspect of the site is the inward-looking courtyard, which, much like the existing buildings, was tired and dated. Whilst the new structure has reduced the external space, the composition has created a place that feels well-connected and, importantly, bigger than the previous arrangement. This space offers a moment of peace within the busy town centre and ensuring privacy for visitors and staff alike.

The scheme embraces a modern vernacular with a carefully composed palette. A dark-stained outer shell contrasts with a lighter internal soffit, guiding visitors gently inward. Internally, coffered ceilings mirror this contrast, reinforcing the journey from public to private space.

Sustainably sourced larch cladding, treated with Rubio stain, creates a distinctive two-tone effect. This approach delivers visual warmth and aligns with the aesthetic of other Tapper sites across Dorset.
