Religious Complex and Service Chapel

Nestled in the heart of West Dorset, this new service chapel complex will transform a tired semi-derletic brownfield site into a vibrant and positive community facility.

The use of lightweight timber fins, sandwiched by frameless glass embodies the strength and serenity commonly seen in Scandinavian architecture. The vertical timber fins mirror the mature landscape, establishing a strong visual connection between the built form and the natural setting.

The existing building will be transformed to house a reception area, meeting rooms, together with chapels of rest and other important facilities. Importantly the new structure is set away from the existing building and historic garden walls, creating the effect of a lightweight ‘Jewellery Box’ being gently placed in this landscaped setting.

Integral to the project's success was the client's involvement at every stage of the design process. ( the scheme was developed and presented using Virtual Reality). We worked closely together to create a design that responds perfectly to the existing site constraints, the complicated interplay of public and very private requirements and the need to provide a bright, warm and natural backdrop for significant events.

The project breathes new life into the grounds of a semi-derelict former Edwardian dwelling and demonstrates how religious complexes can become the beacon for community focused events and how thoughtful architecture can create light, bright and positive environments which can provide comfort and care.
