Private Residence Remodel on the Jurassic Coast
The project, located in the picturesque coastal village of Osmington Mills on the Jurassic Coast, was completed in 2023. This extensive refurbishment of an existing dwelling aimed to update both the internal and external aspects of the house, offering the family a comfortable, contemporary living space while enhancing their connection to the landscape. The spectacular views of the surrounding coast provided the foundation for the project’s concept, to open up a previously closed floorplan and maximise this dramatic location.

DMW carefully considered the environmental characteristics of this coastal location, which informed the material selection and design choices to ensure the house would endure the exposed location.
To enhance the engagement with the landscape and changing views, the project included playful additions such as window seats and a large round picture window. These elements provide unique vantage points from which the family can fully appreciate the beauty of the surroundings. Additionally, a muted and simple palette of natural materials was selected to reference the tones and textures of the surrounding landscape and ensure durability in the exposed location.
A prominent feature is a large apex window set within a vaulted living space, which promote connectivity to the outdoor terrace. The fine profile bi-parting glazed doors minimise the visual intrusion of the glazing frames, maximising the uninterrupted views. The main living space is accessed through a set of Crittall-style doors, which mirror the openings to the opposite site of the hallway, allowing borrowed light to enter the circulation core.
Construction methods focused on sustainability and durability. Prefabricated elements were incorporated where possible to reduce construction time. The use of locally sourced stone and timber further minimised the environmental impact. The design also prioritised high-performance insulation and energy-efficient glazing, which will help ensure the home remains comfortable throughout the year and reduce the need for excessive heating or cooling.
The interior design scheme followed a similar muted palette of premium finishes with careful pops of colour integrated through artwork and the client's personal book collection.
