Trokes Coppice
Woodland Burial Complex
Due for completion in Spring 2026, the Trokes Coppice project will see the expansion of the Harbour View Woodland Burial Complex in Dorset. This scheme continues our work with Tapper Funeral Services, to create spaces that respect both the environment and the needs of the community during times of loss.

The design journey unfolds through a series of interconnected spaces, each offering moments of solace and connection with nature. At its heart is a circular columbarium, a symbolic and functional centrepiece where visitors can honour their loved ones.
Thoughtful interventions, such as courtyards and water features, provide a narrative of renewal and a constant connection to nature. The architecture employs a minimalist language, with simple, robust forms that blend into the natural surroundings. In-situ concrete walls, timber rings, and clerestory glazing define the aesthetic, creating spaces that flow from inside and out, providing an ever present anchor to the landscaped setting.
The key features of the design include:
- Courtyard Garden: A central, open-air space for gatherings and contemplation.
- Private Chapels: Intimate spaces for personal reflection and ceremonies.
- Circular Columbarium: A public memorial space for cremated remains and candles.
- Office Facilities: Operational spaces integrated discreetly into the design.
- Water Features: A rill and reflecting pool contribute to the serene atmosphere.
The landscape scheme seeks to preserve the existing vegetation and enhance existing on-site wildlife habitats. The proposal also includes the creation of wildflower meadows and integration of mature specimen trees and foliage to increase biodiversity.
The design employs 'table' structures that provide covered spaces across the development. These structures will provide visitors and staff with meaningful and sheltered places to pause and reflect. They add character to the Woodland Burial Complex and improve the overall experience for all who visit.
The centre piece is the Columbarium structure, which a provides a space to gather and contemplate. Designed as a stepped dome, the dramatic roof structure is set over circular concrete walls, employing a continuous band of glazing, drawing light in and providing an unbroken connection to the landscape. Working closely with Vincent Design Engineering, the structure has been designed, with a section size of only 30mm – 50mm for the supporting columns, which will add significant drama to the space and the significant events.
Trokes Coppice integrates architecture with nature, creating a comforting sanctuary for remembrance, while honouring the ecological and emotional needs of its users. The project is due for completion spring next year and we look forward to sharing updates as we head towards the finish line.
