Underwood Farm

A Dutch Barn in a Dark Sky Reserve

Underwood Farm is a contemporary reimagining of the traditional Dutch barn, designed as a low-energy family home in the heart of rural Dorset. Set within the Greenbelt and the Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the project replaces two disused agricultural barns and a pair of brick cottages, on a site with existing residential planning approval.

Commissioned by a private client, the brief called for a modest, sustainable dwelling that would integrate seamlessly with the landscape. Following pre-application consultation with Dorset Council, the design was refined to enhance contextual sensitivity and sustainability performance. Inspired by the curved, lightweight forms of local barrel-vaulted barns, the building adopts a linear layout that aligns with the existing topography. A weathered steel exoskeleton defines the home’s silhouette, casting deep shadows to reduce solar gain and reduce domestic visual cues.

The building is designed to passive solar principles, with a super-insulated structure, shaded living areas, and minimal light spill—supporting its location within the Cranborne Chase International Dark Sky Reserve. Living spaces face south to maximise natural light and connect with surrounding field views, while the northern edge is subtly recessed into the landform to reduce visual impact and shield against prevailing winds.

A comprehensive landscape scheme will further embed the dwelling into its setting, enhancing biodiversity and maintaining the rural character. Underwood Farm represents a quietly confident architectural response—balancing innovation, sustainability, and a deep respect for place.
