The client, Douch Family Funeral Directors, sought to rejuvenate a dated facility, aligning it with the evolving needs of families and communities. Situated in the village of Corfe Mullen, East Dorset, the site is a cornerstone of the local community calling for a design approach that honours its legacy while acknowledging the need for change.

The guiding concept was to craft a space of solace and functionality, focusing on openness, light, and modern materials. The design sought to create an environment where families could find comfort while navigating difficult moments. The project narrative unfolds as a transition from a previously dim, utilitarian structure to a light-filled, welcoming space. Western red cedar cladding, vaulted interiors, and carefully articulated gables evoke a sense of calm.

In partnership with Greendale Construction Ltd, the project employed innovative techniques to optimise both value and design. The construction process balanced precision and efficiency, ensuring a seamless transition from concept to reality. Energy-efficient systems and materials were integral to the design, aligning with contemporary standards for sustainability. The use of natural ventilation and durable materials ensures long-term environmental and economic benefits.

The funeral home is organised around the needs of its users:

  • Reception and Office Spaces: Bright and welcoming, designed for efficiency and comfort.
  • Chapels of Rest and Service Chapel: Peaceful spaces for private reflection and larger gatherings.
  • Multifunctional Spaces: Adaptable for various administrative and ceremonial uses.
