Arts & Crafts Home Remodelling

The transformation of this quintessential Arts & Crafts home exemplifies the seamless integration of modern interventions with heritage architecture. Located in a serene suburban setting, the project reimagines the home’s ground floor and loft space, creating light-filled, functional living areas that celebrate the family’s connection to the garden while honouring the property’s original character.

DMW were approached by a private family to remodel the ground floor to include a spacious kitchen and dining area that connects to the garden and introduce a master bedroom suite in the loft. The clients envisioned a home that retained its historic charm while embracing modern functionality, making it suitable for their evolving lifestyle. Situated in a leafy suburban neighbourhood, the property benefits from a generous garden and a tranquil setting. The home’s orientation was ideal for maximising passive solar gain, a key consideration in the design of the extensions.

The single-story side and rear extension transform the ground floor into a series of inter-connected spaces that emphasise openness and light. On the second floor, the dormer addition maintains the home’s proportions while introducing much-needed vertical space.

The original Arts & Crafts house, with its signature black-painted timber and red brick façade, is a testament to early 20th-century craftsmanship. The redesign sought to preserve and reinterpret this historical language, blending modern elements in a way that complements the home's heritage.

The architectural language of the extensions is decidedly modern, with clean lines and a restrained material palette. These new elements are designed to stand apart as contemporary insertions.
